The Clinical Coding Department is responsible for abstracting and analysing complex clinical information from patients records and translate this into a coded format in line with National Standards.
To enter the final encoded data onto the appropriate computer systems to meet essential Trust requirements for statutory information and financial flows.
The post holder will work as part of a team of experienced trained staff, the job will involve rotation between duties working on all specialties.
The job requires an enthusiastic, adaptable person with a methodical approach and high attention to detail, able to work following demanding deadlines and timescales.
To plan and prioritise own workload to meet departmental targets and to advise the manager of any hindrance to the achievement of these targets.
To have full knowledge in coding procedures and conventions, medical terminology, anatomical and physiological terms, acquired by undertaking training to National Standards
Obtain and accurately code medical information of inpatients and day case episodes using the national standard guidelines of the World Health Organisation using ICD10 and OPCS4.10
Analyse and abstract complex clinical information from a variety of data sources.
Use this information to assign accurate, timely, complete, and consistent diagnostic and procedure coding to all inpatient episodes in line with the national and local coding standards and guidelines to meet the service level agreements of the Trust.
Input assigned clinical codes onto the Trust’s encoder system, informing data managers of any errors concerning admission, transfer and discharge information which might compromise Trust income and data quality.
To advise the manager on the standards of information provided for clinical coding, particularly if this becomes unacceptable; to evaluate and discuss with the manager any problems that arise, and to assist in the implementation of any changes required.
